this morning we woke up about 6:30, and stayed in bed talking until almost 8. finally got up and headed to the bank, returned yojimbo to the video store, and got two chais. we stopped at TBM for bit to bide our time, then got on the highway for wisconsin. an hour later we arrived at emerald kennels, the home of the new dogs of 'greyhounds only', the adoption group with whom we work.
seth was pleased to see all the other dogs visiting, and had a good time. the sun was out, it was in the 40's. about 20 dogs were loose in the 'yard' of the kennel, which is about two acres, fenced. once seth was comfortable, we let him off the leash to run, and he did great, for a bit. once he was really ready to run, he was leading he pack in a wide loop from the back of the yard towards all the people at the front, when a lone dog came across the pack at full speed, traveling perpendicular to the pack. this dog slammed into seth and sent him flying, end over end. he started screaming in pain as all the people ran towards the pile of dogs, with me in the lead. as is the nature of greyhounds in race mode, the other dogs we lunging at seth as he lay on the ground. a couple of us waded in and pulled them all away and started to check seth over. we got him to stop screaming, and i could see blood in his mouth, inside his muzzle. his rear legs appeared to hurt him a lot; i was pretty sure he had broken something. i talked to him and petted him while the medic woman looked his legs over, but nothing was obviously broken. after a few minutes, i decided to let him up, and he pulled himself to his feet, walking with a pretty good limp in his right rear leg, but smiling sheepishly. we walked around on leash, went out to walk the grounds outside the dog fence, and came back in. he was still limping, but appeared okay. after some more visiting, we decided it was probably time to go. it had been an hour and a half of dogtime for seth.
back in the car, back across 50 and down 41. we stopped for subway, and stopped at the chalet to try to get a couple plants for the shop. we ended up getting a dog bed, a squeak toy, and some seeds instead.
back to the shop, di spent the afternoon drawing some 'ex libris' plates while i went through boxes of books, shelving and trashing, filing, archiving. at 4pm we went home.
pizza in front of the blue planet DVD.
i got into the shower and had seth get in the tub to wash the mud off him. he hates this, but was a good sport.
now i'm typing in front of the fire as i try to finish up before we turn off the lights for earth hour.
g'night.

this week at the bird machine
i spent the week signing blue planet prints, working on the quatre tete record cover, and cutting films and printing the blue planet posters. mat came in on wednesday, sara was in all week except monday, sue came in thursday. i managed to finally unpack a bunch of books and boxes in my office, up front. sara and sue both did great jobs of cleaning the shop - it's starting to look like i had hoped.
monday and wednesday, i rode my bike to work. 38 miles for the year, to date.
tuesday night, i drove to pearl to pick up some glow-in-the-dark inks, then met up with john h and jim kamp for burritos, followed by an evening of whiffle ball at some gym near north ave and halsted. it should have been fun, but i actually didn't enjoy it at all, which i am surprised to feel. about 16 guys played in this gym, only one semi-major injury requiring stitches, and i found it boring and frustrating. i left around 10, i think, though it went until midnight.
wednesday night, diana and i watched akira kurosawa's 'yojimbo'.
thursday night, in the snow & sleet, di and i drove to pick up xan, then kylie, and went to "members' night" at the field museum, where we saw some insanely amazing things from the collection, and watched events like, for example, the skinning of a bobcat. after this, we dropped kylie at home, and xan, di & i went to lula for a late dinner.
jason and i spent some time this week booking the june dianogah tour of the east coast, and setting dates for the october eurotour.
one night this week i had a dream that three people pinned me down and tried to tag my left hand, on the webbing between thumb and first finger, with a tag like one might find on the ear of a wild animal. another night i dreamt that ALL my pants had tar on them, from re-tarring a roof. on a third night, i dreamt i was at my parents' house and saw an ostrich handlebar bag sitting on a shelf, thus ruining the surprise of a birthday present.
friday, i stayed late at work, signing prints at my desk, listening to ida. i was very happy to be at the shop, and felt really peaceful, despite the huge number of almost-late poster jobs that are about to hit me next week.

sunday, easter.
we slept late! almost 10am when we got up. i shaved. we walked up to central street and got chai. upon returning home, we tried to make some plans for the yard, including a plot of where things would go, but only decided on two or three trees. di baked cookies. i cued up the computer machine to watch LOST online, but we ran out of time...
around 3:30 we went to di's crazy cousin wendy's place for easter. lovely and fun as always. they usually arrange for games for everyone, despite the fact that the youngest cousin is 24. old people jumping up and down and shooting each other with plastic toys - typical for this side of the family. dinner included white castle burgers, for novelty. seth came with us, and really enjoyed seeing everyone.
drove home and watched the last bit of this week's LOST.
something something bed.

satuday
di and i woe a little late, and went to the gym. i did the elliptical machine again, and stretched a bunch. hot tub, steam room, sauna. from there, we went home, grabbed seth, stopped to pick up some lunch, and went to TBM, where we spent the day in the office. di was drawing and painting for her gawain project, and i was editioning prints.
saturday night, we went to andrew & xan's for fish soup, wilted spinach, and pork. andrew was really concerned that all was overcooked, but it was perfect. on the way, we had stopped to get chocolates and wine, which were also enjoyed.
we watched a dvd of the electric company, and it was surprisingly enjoyable. morgan freeman, rita moreno, irene cara, and bill cosby. who knew? i remembered most of it. pretty great.
drove home in the cold and snow. bed, sleep.

friday
worked all day, as snow fell heavily. mat and sara printed blue planet 'polar bear' prints, and i editioned orcas. cut films, and tried to stay two steps ahead.
diana and tom stack arrived at the shop around 5pm, and after showing tom aroud, we took off for home. dropped seth off, then went to central street to eat thai food. as tom and di went into the thai place, i popped into the video store to rent some DVDs.
back home (in the snow, about 5 inches), we had a good business meeting about flinchy, and made some tangible plans.
tom left, di and i sat down and watched 'i am legend', which, despite it's flaws, was far better than i expected. di fell asleep during the film, and i sent her off to bed when it ended. i stayed up and watched 'pirates of the caribbean 3', during which i came to realize that kiera knightly is quite hot. i don't usually go for the movie-star good looks, but wow.
off to bed around 3am. haven't done that for a while.
